Bowling Green High School's boys soccer team won a replayed penalty shootout against Warren Central 8-7 on Monday, WBKO reported, reclaiming the 4th Region championship and a third straight trip to the state tournament. The Purples play Owensboro on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m., per WBKO.

How It Went

WBKO reported that Bowling Green won the 4th Region final on Oct. 22 and took the original penalty shootout 7-6; WNKY described the 4-3 final score as the shootout result, so check ahead for the official line. Warren Central protested the outcome on Saturday, WBKO reported.

On Monday, the KHSAA ruled the penalty kicks were misapplied and ordered a replay, according to WBKO. WBKO reported that Warren Central Athletics said players from both teams were allowed to take part in sudden-death rounds after already kicking. WNKY reported that NFHS rules don't allow that and that the KHSAA announced the ruling Monday afternoon.

The replay restarted in round 6 with Bowling Green leading 5-4 and ended in round 9 with the Purples ahead 8-7, WBKO reported. WNKY reported it was held Monday evening at Bowling Green Junior High School.

Bowling Green principal Kyle McGraw told parents in a statement, as WBKO reported, that the kicks had to be replayed "at the point of the misapplication of the rule."

Bowling Green Independent Schools Superintendent Gary Fields said he was glad the team won the penalty kicks but that there was "not a whole lot to celebrate tonight," WNKY reported. WBKO reported that Fields was disappointed in the KHSAA's decision and said it created tension between the two programs. WBKO said it contacted KHSAA board director Greg Howard, who is also Warren County Public Schools' athletic director, and had not received a response when it published.
