Preston Miller Park in Bowling Green is slated for two upgrades: new synthetic turf soccer fields and a modernized playground. Both are expected to be finished in spring 2027, WBKO reported Oct. 27.

What is planned

According to WBKO, the park will get two synthetic turf soccer fields with LED lighting. Each field can be set up for 7v7, 9v9 or 11v11 play, and both will also have lacrosse layouts, WBKO reported. The turf is meant to allow play in the off-season, because the park's current Bermuda grass fields go dormant in winter, per the station's report. WBKO said the soccer field renovation is already underway.

The second project is a new playground replacing one that WBKO says was more than 25 years old. Per WBKO, demolition of the old playground began in September, and construction of the new one has not yet started.

Why the city is doing it

WBKO reported that the projects are meant to create more play opportunities and greater inclusivity for children of varying abilities. WBKO said the neighborhood was devastated by the 2021 tornadoes and officials wanted to give residents a new playground. The projects were announced as part of the city's Fiscal Year Capital Improvement Program, WBKO reported.

Haley Parrett, a parks planner, told WBKO, "The playground was over 25 years old. It was in desperate need of renovation for the kids in the neighborhood." Tim Kickert, parks maintenance supervisor, said the current Bermuda grass fields go dormant, according to WBKO. Parrett added, "We hope for these amenities to really improve the community and the neighborhood of the park."

What we don't know yet

WBKO's report did not give project costs or funding sources. Check ahead with Bowling Green Parks and Recreation (bgky.org/bgpr) for closures, field availability and construction updates.
