The Boys & Girls Club of the Bowling Green Area has finished a building expansion that adds a secured entryway and new office space, WBKO reported Oct. 21. WNKY reported that the club held a ribbon cutting for the project on a Wednesday.

The Details

  • Entryway: WBKO reports a secure two-door entryway that gives staff better control over who enters the building. WNKY reports the new entrance has a magnetic locking door and makes it easier for staff to track children as they arrive and leave. CEO Liz Bernard Clark told WBKO safety is the club's top priority.
  • Office and planning space: Both outlets report the addition provides offices and planning space. WBKO reports Bernard Clark said staff, including herself, had been working out of closets. WNKY quotes her saying the project "allowed us to open up more programmatic space in the existing building."
  • Funding: WBKO reports the project was backed by a $1 million state investment and a $1 million gift from the Tincher family, and that the expansion honors the late Bob and Mary Tincher. WNKY reports the state gave $1 million for capital improvements about three years ago, that the Bob and Mary Tincher foundation donated another $1 million, and that the foundation's dissolution and asset distribution brought further support.

The Backstory

A WKU social work field-placement listing gives the club's main site as 260 Scott Way. WBKO reports the club already runs school-based sites at Jennings Creek and Lost River elementary schools. WNKY says the club has sites at several local schools but does not name them.

What It Means for Bowling Green

For families, the most direct change is at the door: an entry built to control access and, per WNKY, help staff keep track of kids coming and going. Neither outlet, as we found it, says how many additional children the club can serve, so families should check with the club about enrollment.

The longer-range plan is school-based. WBKO reports the long-term goal is to reach children at every elementary school in the area, and that the club is working to expand into the Bowling Green city school system and other parts of Warren County. WNKY quotes Bernard Clark: "eventually my ultimate goal is to have a site in every single elementary school." No timeline, list of new schools or cost was reported.
