The former Holiday Inn University Plaza in Bowling Green, Kentucky, has become the Crowne Plaza Bowling Green after an eight-month renovation of the 218-room hotel, and it marked the change with a local-history open house, WBKO reported Sept. 23.

  • What: The property is now a Crowne Plaza by IHG, according to WNKY and the hotel's management company, Atrium Hospitality.
  • Rooms: Atrium Hospitality describes a 218-room hotel with every guest room and suite, meeting venue and public space renewed.

The Backstory

WBKO reported that guests touring the hotel on Tuesday met costumed characters, including Duncan Hines and Michael Myers, as part of a theme built around Bowling Green's history. General Manager Megan Wallstrom described the event as an open house celebrating the renovation and the conversion to a Crowne Plaza, with the hotel celebrating Bowling Green and its history. The reports said the local-history focus was intentional, starting with a Corvette.

WNKY reported the bar was designed around the area's cave system, with photos tied to Prohibition-era history and a speakeasy in the caves. WNKY also reported the atrium, which previously had multiple levels, a river-like feature and many plants, now has a level floor.

What It Means for Bowling Green

The hotel sits alongside a city-owned conference center with about 40,000 square feet of event space. Atrium Hospitality, the hotel's management company, looked for a brand that made sense alongside that center, and Crowne Plaza is IHG's meetings and events brand. For visitors booking conferences or events in town, the brand change signals that focus.
