The Bowling Green Police Department's planned East Precinct, in the former Sherwood's Guns building on Bryant Way near Scottsville Road and Interstate 65, is under renovation, and the department expects the work to finish in the new year, WBKO reported Oct. 23.
The Details
- Where: 940 Bryant Way, at the far end of Scottsville Road near I-65, according to the Bowling Green Daily News.
- When: WBKO reports the department expects renovations to be complete in the new year and gives no opening date. In April, WBKO reported police hoped to begin operating from the building around October 2026, so that target has moved.
- Cost: The Daily News reports the city paid $3.1 million for the property and that renovation work runs more than half a million dollars, after city commissioners approved Windsor Construction's bid. The Daily News said the city bought the building in March; WBKO's April story described the purchase as still pending.
- Size: About 18,000 square feet, including a 12-lane indoor shooting range, the Daily News reports.
Why It Matters on the East Side
Chief Michael Delaney told the Daily News, "It's hard getting out Scottsville Road, even with lights and sirens." He said the precinct "will be staffed like our offices at 911 Kentucky Street," which the paper identifies as the department's main headquarters. The Daily News reports the building will include public space for filing police reports and interview rooms.
WBKO reports east-side residents will be able to connect with their police department "without having to go all the way downtown," as Delaney put it.
Beyond Patrol
WBKO reported in April that the department's outdoor range is weather-dependent and has flooded several times; with an indoor range, Delaney said then, "It doesn't matter on the weather now." WBKO's October report says the site will include space for a wellness center for first responders, and notes the department now runs its own police academy.
